Dear family and friends,

I'm writing to ask for your help with something that matters deeply to our family: research into hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP).

Why this matters to our family and to everyone in our communities.

HSP runs in our family. Several of us already have the diagnosis. Others have no symptoms right now, but with HSP you never know when, or if, they might appear. The specific gene behind our family's HSP hasn't been identified yet, which is exactly one reason ongoing research matters. Every step toward finding it brings us closer to answers for the relatives we know are affected and for those who may be at risk without knowing it.

Why it matters beyond our family

HSP research is also helping people with other neurological illnesses. Scientists are studying how nerve cells carry materials along their longest fibers, and when that system breaks down, similar problems show up in ALS, Parkinson's, and other conditions. Because HSP has genetic causes, it gives researchers a clear way to see where things go wrong. What's learned here can help people well beyond HSP.

Why I'm asking you

Throughout my working years, I always made time to advocate for people with disabilities. Being retired, it now takes up much more of my time. Along with serving as the Colorado Ambassador for the HSP Foundation, it's a big part of my work in the community. Right now I'm working with other community members on the first steps of forming an ADA Inclusion Advisory Committee to advise the City of Arvada. As far as I know, no other committee like it exists or is being formed in Colorado, so it could be the first in the state, and I'm so very proud of that. I'm also writing "A Seat at the Table," a series of articles to help Olde Town Arvada businesses and other businesses in the area welcome everyone. HSP is one part of this work, and it's the part closest to our family.

People with disabilities belong at the table. They need to be part of the conversation and included in their communities, not left on the outside.

Your gift supports research that could change the future for our family and for others living with neurological conditions, and it backs the belief behind everything I do.
